Why Solana liquid staking feels different

Two things separate Solana from Ethereum here. First, staking rewards on Solana tend to sit in the 5-8% range approximately, higher than the 3-4% commonly seen on Ethereum, partly because SOL inflation is higher. Second, MEV rewards from Jito's block-building software add a small extra layer of income on top for validators using it. Pools like JitoSOL pass a share of that back to holders.

The net effect is that headline yields can look a bit richer than on Ethereum. Look under the hood before that number matters, though — fees, validator quality and the token's DeFi reach all take a bigger bite of the story than the raw APY. Each protocol has its own way of choosing where your SOL gets staked:

  • Marinade runs an algorithm that rebalances toward validators with good performance and lower commission, and it caps how much stake any one validator can receive.
  • Jito curates a validator set that runs Jito's MEV-aware client. That's how it captures the extra rewards.
  • SolBlaze lets you point some of your stake at a specific validator, which is useful if you want to support smaller operators.
  • Coinbase runs the validators for cbSOL itself, keeping things centralized in exchange for simplicity.

None of these are perfect. Concentrating stake in a handful of pools raises the same worry Ethereum has around Lido: fewer independent hands holding a bigger share of the network.

Real risks to weigh

Liquid staking on Solana carries the same broad risk buckets you'd see anywhere:

  1. Depeg risk. Any of these tokens can trade below the SOL they represent when many people rush to exit. It's happened before and will happen again.
  2. Smart-contract risk. A bug in a pool contract could freeze or drain funds. Audits help but don't eliminate this.
  3. Slashing risk. Solana's version is milder than Ethereum's — usually loss of rewards rather than staked principal for downtime — but real.
  4. Price risk. SOL can fall further than any staking yield you're earning. Nothing about liquid staking cushions that.

  • Do you already use DeFi apps that support one of these tokens? Match the token to the protocols you actually use.
  • Do you care about supporting smaller validators, or just want the deepest liquidity?
  • How comfortable are you with contract risk versus exchange risk?

For someone brand new, mSOL or JitoSOL are usually the two easiest to route into and out of. For someone who already banks with an exchange and doesn't want a self-custody wallet, cbSOL is the low-friction path. Neither of those is a recommendation — it's just the shape of the trade-off.
