People pick liquid staking protocols the way they pick banks: usually the biggest one, sometimes on a friend's recommendation, rarely by matching the product to their own risk profile. The result is a lot of stETH held by people who'd actually be more comfortable with rETH, and vice versa. Different protocols make different tradeoffs, and knowing what you're prioritizing changes the answer.
Below is a framework for the choice, followed by where the current majors land on it.
The four axes that matter
Every liquid staking protocol makes tradeoffs along a small number of dimensions. Getting clear on which one you care about most narrows the field fast.
- Decentralization โ how many independent operators run validators, and how permissioned the set is.
- Track record โ how long the protocol has been live, how many audits, how many incidents.
- Custody model โ whether the protocol is fully non-custodial (smart contracts hold everything) or partially custodial (a company holds staked ETH).
- DeFi depth โ how deeply the receipt token is integrated with DeFi (lending markets, DEX liquidity, collateral acceptance).
No protocol wins on all four. Lido has enormous DeFi depth but attracts criticism for validator concentration. Rocket Pool is proudly permissionless but has thinner liquidity. Read this table with your own priorities in mind. A person who wants maximum DeFi flexibility ranks Lido highly; a person worried about validator concentration on Ethereum weights Rocket Pool higher. Both are defensible.
Matching risk profiles to protocols
Here's the actual matching exercise. Pick the row that best describes your situation:
- New to crypto, wants steady reward income, doesn't use DeFi. Coinbase cbETH or exchange staking often fits. Familiar interface, one company to trust, regulated context in most jurisdictions.
- Comfortable with DeFi, wants liquid receipt for lending or swapping. Lido stETH/wstETH is the default because acceptance is everywhere. Rocket Pool rETH is the close alternative if decentralization matters more than depth.
- Prioritizes decentralization above all else. Rocket Pool or a smaller permissionless protocol. Yield may be slightly lower; comfort is higher.
- Wants extra yield and can accept short track record. Newer LSTs, restaking variants (LRTs like eETH, ezETH). Extra reward comes with extra layers of risk โ see the risks page.
- Staking Solana or a non-Ethereum chain. Jito or Marinade for SOL. Each ecosystem has its own leaders; blanket ETH advice doesn't transfer.
Questions to ask any protocol before you commit
Six questions that separate marketing from mechanics:
- How many independent audits, and by whom?
- Has the protocol experienced slashing or a bug incident? What was the recovery?
- Who runs the validators? How many, and can anyone join?
- What's the current withdrawal queue length?
- Where does the receipt token trade with real liquidity?
- What's the fee, and does it change?

A note on yields
Yields cluster in a fairly narrow band across major Ethereum LSTs โ historically around 3-5% APY, all approximate, all subject to change with network activity. A protocol advertising much more usually has a reason (extra emissions, restaking exposure, higher risk operators). Small differences in headline APY between Lido, Rocket Pool, and cbETH mostly reflect fee structures rather than better validators. That's the wrong reason to pick a protocol. Fit matters more than a few basis points.
Choosing a liquid staking protocol that fits your risk level honestly
Start with your priority โ decentralization, track record, custody model, or DeFi depth โ then narrow to the two or three protocols that lead on that axis, then check them against the six questions above. That process produces a choice you can live with for years, which is much more useful than picking the highest APY on a Tuesday.
