Nobody talks about exits until they need one, and by then it's usually too late for a considered decision. Unstaking a liquid staking token โ€” stETH, rETH, cbETH or a Solana LST โ€” has more moving parts than depositing does.

Here's the plain guide to how it actually works, and how to avoid the small mistakes that quietly cost people rewards they already earned.

The two exit paths

Every liquid staking token gives you two ways out:

  1. Native unstaking โ€” you burn the token, join a withdrawal queue, and eventually receive real ETH (or SOL, whatever chain). Full value, but you wait.
  2. DEX swap โ€” you trade the token for ETH on a decentralized exchange. Instant, but subject to slippage and any market discount.

Which one is better depends on how urgently you need the funds and what the token is currently trading at. If both concepts feel new, the liquid staking primer lays the groundwork.

When native unstaking wins

Native unstaking is the right call when the token trades below its underlying value and you're not in a rush. Ethereum's withdrawal queue length varies: it can be hours during quiet periods and stretch into weeks during heavy exits. You keep earning rewards for most of the wait, because your ETH stays staked until the queue reaches you.

The catch is that queues get longest exactly when everyone wants out โ€” bear markets, protocol scares, whale exits. Plan for the possibility that a fast queue today might be a slow queue tomorrow. Chain-specific unbonding periods for Solana LSTs and Cosmos-chain equivalents follow similar patterns with different durations.

When swapping on a DEX wins

DEX exits win when the token trades at or near fair value and you need the funds fast. The math is straightforward:

For small positions, gas often dominates. For large ones, slippage is the killer โ€” always check pool depth before hitting confirm. Aggregators like 1inch or Cowswap tend to route better than single DEXes.

Protecting rewards you already earned

People sometimes think exiting means forfeiting recent rewards. That's usually not the case, but the details matter.

On rebasing tokens like stETH, your balance already reflects earned rewards up to the last rebase. On value-accruing tokens like rETH, the token's exchange rate already includes them. Selling or unstaking realizes whatever you've earned โ€” the receipt is the reward.

Where people actually lose is in three places: (1) exiting during a depeg when they could wait, (2) missing the last rebase before unstaking by minutes, and (3) paying gas that outweighs their earnings on tiny positions. The rewards mechanics page covers the accrual side in detail.

How to unstake liquid staking tokens cleanly

Put it all together with a simple decision tree:

  • Check the current market price of your LST versus its underlying asset.
  • If it's within a fraction of a percent of fair value, either path works โ€” pick based on urgency.
  • If it's discounted meaningfully, native unstaking almost always beats selling at the discount.
  • Estimate the queue length before committing (protocol dashboards publish this).
  • For DEX exits, use an aggregator, check pool depth, and set slippage tight.

None of this is complicated. It just requires five minutes of thought before hitting confirm โ€” five minutes that has saved a lot of people from turning a paper discount into a real loss. And remember the underlying risks of staking don't disappear just because you're exiting; smart-contract and depeg risk apply until the ETH actually lands in your wallet.

One habit worth borrowing from more experienced stakers: never do a large unstake in a single transaction if you can avoid it. Splitting exits into two or three tranches spreads out slippage on DEXes, hedges you against a queue length that changes mid-exit, and gives you a chance to react if market conditions shift halfway through. The small extra gas is usually worth the flexibility, especially on positions that took months to build up.
